Slay, Robert Duncan Sr
Colonel Robert Duncan Slay, Sr Marine combat aviator with over 31-years of active duty. Col. Slay flew 87 combat missions in the Korean War and 187 combat missions as the commander of Marine Air Group Eleven during his two tours of duty in Vietnam. A highly decorated officer, Colonel Slay's personal awards include the Distinguished Flying Cross with Gold Star and three Air Medals for his service in Korea, the legion of Merit and the Combat Action Ribbon for his service in Vietnam. At the close of his active duty career, he received a second legion of Merit for his career contributions. While serving on active duty, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1960, and a Masters of Science degree in International Affairs from George Washington University In 1970. He finished his distinguished career as an instructor, and later President, of the School of Naval Warfare Newport, RI. Considered a Marine's Marine by all he served with, he was an inspiration for the book and motion picture The Great Santini, by Pat Conroy.
